Planning a trip to Tokyo but want to explore beyond the city limits?
Whether you’re staying 4, 5, or 7 days, this itinerary blends the best of urban energy, natural beauty, and cultural escapes, without the overwhelm.
I created this guide to help you explore Tokyo like a local and make the most of your time with smart day trips around the region. Let’s dive in.
🗓️ Day 1 – Welcome to Tokyo: From Chaos to Calm
Start your adventure in Shibuya, where the iconic crossing sets the tone: electric, fast-paced, unforgettable. Then balance it out with the peaceful greenery of Shinjuku Gyoen or the Imperial Palace East Gardens.
📍 Tip: Harajuku’s Takeshita Street is perfect for quirky fashion and matcha crepes.
🗓️ Day 2 – Kamakura & Enoshima: Coastal Zen
Take a break from the city and head to Kamakura—home to giant Buddhas, bamboo groves, and seaside vibes.
Then continue to Enoshima Island for caves, ocean views, and sunsets worth remembering.
🚆 Easy day trip from Tokyo with the Enoden train line.
🗓️ Day 3 – A Glimpse of Mount Fuji
You can’t come to Japan and not try to see Mount Fuji.
Head to Lake Kawaguchiko or the Fuji Five Lakes area for stunning views and crisp mountain air.
🏞️ No hiking required—just views, nature, and maybe a cable car ride.
🗓️ Day 4 – Time Travel to Kawagoe
Nicknamed Little Edo, Kawagoe takes you back to Japan’s samurai era.
Wander along Kurazukuri Street, spot the Toki no Kane bell tower, and don’t skip the local sweet potato snacks.
🍠 Yes, even sweet potato ice cream exists here.
🗓️ Day 5 – Nikko: Shrines & Waterfalls
If you love forest vibes and intricate temples, Nikko is a must.
The Toshogu Shrine is jaw-dropping, and the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and bridges make it one of the best day trips from Tokyo.
🌿 Pro tip: Go early to beat the tour buses.
🗓️ Day 6 – Hakone for Art and Onsen
Switch gears and unwind in Hakone.
Ride the scenic ropeway, visit the Open-Air Museum, and soak in an onsen with Mount Fuji on the horizon.
♨️ Don’t forget to try black eggs from Owakudani—legend says they add 7 years to your life.
🗓️ Day 7 – Odaiba & Tokyo Bay: End on a High-Tech Note
Wrap up your week in futuristic Odaiba.
Explore teamLab Borderless (if reopened), shop by the bay, or hop on the Ferris wheel for city views.
🛍️ Bonus: It’s a great spot to pick up souvenirs before your flight.
🔁 Only 4 or 5 Days?
Here’s how to adapt:
4 days: Stick to Tokyo (Day 1), Kamakura (Day 2), Mt. Fuji (Day 3), and Odaiba (Day 7).
5 days: Add either Kawagoe or Hakone depending on your vibe—culture or relaxation.
